There are two important parts to an effective gutter system: Proper gutter installation and periodic maintenance. Proper gutter installation means making sure the water is being diverted far away enough from the house so no damage is sustained around the foundation or on the siding and that no water is left to pool inside the gutter or downspout. Pooling water can contribute to gutter damage, clogs, mildew, and mosquitoes
Take a minute to evaluate your gutters and downspouts. The following steps will help you evaluate your gutter system. If you would like, the Gutter Experts at Dependable Gutters are happy to help.
When it's not raining:
- If you have water dripping from the gutter corners, that means the seal has broken and water is standing in the gutter.
- If the gutter is sagging or pulling away from the house. This could indicate really full gutters and weak supports. It also could indicate that the fascia board has become rotten.
- Washed out landscaping or holes in the ground underneath the gutters. This indicates a clogged gutter and overflowing water.
- Wood damage on your deck or window sills also comes from overflowing gutters.
- Your downspouts could become disconnected or damaged and not able to handle water from the roof.
- If your roof valleys are full of leaves that may indicate that your gutters are also full of leaves.
When it is raining:
- Water shooting over the gutters, especially in a corner. This could indicate the gutter is clogged or is not positioned properly.
- Water is bubbling out where the downspout ties into an underground drain. This indicates the drain is clogged.
- Water dripping from between the gutter and the fascia board. This could indicate there is no drip edge between the roof and your gutter.
- Water is dripping from the soffit area. This indicates that the roof is impaired.
